The Licensed Psychotherapist, Generalist is a Partial Year Career, Master's level position. A Partial Year Career position is established to accommodate foreseeable seasonal fluctuations in staffing and operational need and contains regularly scheduled non-work periods during which the Licensed Psychotherapist remains an employee and retains health benefits, but is not at work. Please note that the Licensed Psychotherapist, Generalist, non-work period is for 4 weeks during the summer and is unpaid time off.

UC Santa Cruz Student Health Services (SHS) strives to create a caring and supportive environment to assist students in improving their physical and emotional well-being to aid in their academic success. We are a full-service medical facility offering clinical, educational, and psychological services to diverse students on the UC Santa Cruz campus. Comprising a variety of Clinical Services, including Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Laboratory, and X-ray, SHS also has an onsite retail pharmacy, offering both prescriptive pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter products. Other departments include Student Health Outreach and Promotion (SHOP), home of the Condom Co-op; CARE (Campus Advocacy, Resources, and Education) the advocacy and prevention education office that supports survivors of sexual assault, stalking, and dating/domestic violence; and Student Insurance Programs. Student Health Services employs approximately 120 staff including physicians, psychiatrists, case managers, lab scientists, pharmacists, nurses, radiologists, and many other clinical and administrative staff. We welcome staff with interest and experience in working with students with a wide range of ethnic, cultural, and gender identities.



The Licensed Psychotherapist, Generalist reports to the Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and is assigned duties by the Director as specified herein. The Licensed Psychotherapist will provide high quality clinical services; community psychology/outreach and consultation services; and may provide supervision/training of doctoral interns and post-doctoral fellows. In discharging these duties the Licensed Psychotherapist is expected to be keenly sensitive to issues of gender, culture, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disabilities, socio-economic status, etc. and to be skilled with techniques for counseling students with diverse backgrounds.   ‚ÄčThe Licensed Psychotherapist's activities are performed within the limits of standards and ethical principles of their licensure board as well as applicable legal mandates for mental health professionals in the State of California. 



Salary Information: $6,990.27 - $8,865.94 per month for 11 months.  Salary commensurate with years of licensed experience as well as specialized skills and qualifications.

65% - Direct Service
  • Provides brief counseling and psychotherapy for undergraduate and graduate students (individuals and couples) with a broad range of psychological problems
  • Provides crisis assessment and crisis intervention
  • Provides case management and referral services
  • Conducts group counseling and psychoeducational groups, and drop-in groups
  • Consults with students, faculty, and staff regarding issues that affect the developmental and psychological well-being of students in the university community
  • Consults and collaborates with psychiatrists, physicians, campus entities (i.e. Slug Support, Disability Resource Center, and others) and off-campus mental health professionals, social agencies, and community resources to meet the mental health needs of students
  • Determines the need for other professional interventions and refers as necessary
  • Develops and implements outreach programs, trainings, and class presentations (up to 5% of time worked)
  • All licensed staff will provide consultation for the After-Hours Crisis Service as scheduled
  • Other duties, as assigned

35% - Indirect Service
  • Functions as a community psychotherapist and a consultant to faculty, staff, residential life staff, and other units on campus regarding collaboration and program development for outreach and training to enhance the mental health and psychological well-being of students and the campus community
  • Participates regularly in a cooperative and professional manner in efforts to maintain and upgrade the quality of service of the CAPS unit by participating in CAPS committees and workgroups and by collaborating with other licensed psychotherapists, college administrators, staff, and faculty in program development, committee work, and consultation
  • Promotes a safe and healthy workplace and effectively responds to injuries that occur
  • Other duties, as assigned


  • Valid California licensure in good standing in Social Work or Marriage and Family Therapy
  • Demonstrated clinical experience with individuals using a brief therapy model
  • Demonstrated strong clinical and crisis management skills, including ability to work with high acuity students with complex mental health needs
  • Experience facilitating psychotherapy and psycho-educational groups
  • Demonstrated experience providing culturally affirming and responsive clinical services for a diverse client population
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding, and stated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity issues in the delivery of psychological services in a university or college setting
  • Demonstrated expertise with developmental and mental health issues of late adolescence
  • Demonstrated ability to work in an interdisciplinary team and to effectively collaborate with people of diverse backgrounds
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, ability to be an effective team member, and evidence of professional behavior
  • Strong planning and organizational skills


  • Counseling experience in a college/university setting
  • Experience designing and implementing multiculturally sensitive outreach programs and psychoeducational workshops
  • Experience working with an underserved population relevant to the UCSC student body
  • Experience with ADHD assessment


  • Valid California licensure, in good standing in Social Work, or Marriage and Family Therapy
  • Selected candidate will be required to successfully complete both a pre-hire criminal history background check and a pre-hire credentialing check prior to formal offer of employment.

  • Selected candidate will be required to complete Title IX (Sexual Harassment) training every two years.
  • Selected Candidate will be required to take HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accessibility) training within 30 days of hire.
